"The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)"

"What does the fox say?," he asks, chuckling.

I resist the urge to roll my eyes. I know what this fox says. She's been saying it over and over since 5 pm, and now it's getting close to dusk. I respond with a laugh, a sugar-induced laugh. I've been sampling from the cute little fox's stash since 5 pm.

She really wanted to be a fox this year for Halloween. Maybe foxes have always been popular Halloween costumes for little girls. There is a chance that "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)," the electronic dance song by Ylvis that went viral in 2013, helped foxes make it to the top costumes list for Halloween. Which came first, the popularity of the fox costume for Halloween or the popularity of the song, "The Fox"? It's an age-old question. Thanks to that song, it's not the first time someone has asked me that today.

Instead of answering his question, I wait and observe this little fox in its natural habitat, a suburban neighborhood on Halloween. The adorable little fox steps up to the door, pressing the doorbell while she clutches her bounty of candy. The door bell rings. Ding dong.

The cute little fox says, "Trick or treat!"
